Born in Waupee, SC on May 2, 1934, son of the late Ernest and Cora (Grissett) Vaught, he was raised in South Carolina and moved to Hartford in 1954.
James served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War era and was honorably discharged in 1956. James always had a passion for auto body repair and after several years of working part-time he opened his own business, Vaught Autobody which he owned and operated for over 30 years serving customers throughout the Hartford area.
In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing both freshwater and saltwater and took many trips to Cape Cod, MA, Moodus Reservoir, Twin Lakes, Black Pond, and other places throughout New England. Most of all, he will be remembered as a hardworking family man.
Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Michael James Vaught and his wife Lavenia Renae of Hartford, Moses Lucius Vaught of Hartford, and Matthew Deon Vaught and his wife Marisa of New Britain; four daughters, Mary Monique Vaught of Hartford, Melissa Martha Vaught of Hartford, Michele Flythe of New Jersey, and Sabrina Wallace Perez; his brother and fishing partner, Amos Jefferson Vaught and his wife Ruby of Hartford; a sister-in-law, Loretta Vaught of Hartford; nine grandchildren, Imani Vaught, Kearah Vaught, Moesha Vaught, Matthew Vaught, Jr., Jayla Grier, Janiyah Henry, Jordan Knight, Malachi Knight, and Moses Perez; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Marvin Alexander Vaught; a brother, Johnny Lee Vaught; and a sister, Louise Dailey.
Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery, 317 Bow Lane, Middletown.
