Lee was the son of Theodore E. Rowell and Elaine Rowell of Duluth Minnesota and he enlisted in the US Marine Corps on January 24 1947 in Minneapolis Minnesota. He arrived in Vietnam on August 20 where he was assigned to and served with H&S Company, 3d Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
During the month of February the Battalion was conducting combat operations in northern Quang Tri Province. The "Alpa" Command group and two rifle companies operated from Thon Son Lam, while the "Bravo" group, with three companies were located at the Ca Lu Combat Base.
On February 22, PFC Rowell was accidently injured by a ground signal device. Evacuated for medical treatment to the Station Hospital NSA un DaNang, he died on the following day from the head injury he sustained.
