Henry was born in Shelby County, Ohio the second son of William & Anna (Lanfersieck) Grothaus. He married Emilie Vogelsang, daughter of Fred & Minnie (Kuenning) Vogelsang. This union had two children, Alvin and Walter. He was a partner in the Lanfersieck-Grothaus Company, involved in the building of steel bridges, and later in the New Bremen Bridge company. He was a member of the First National Bank, becoming its president. He was a Democrat and served one term as county treasurer (1902-1906). He also served New Bremen for six years on the school board, six years as town clerk and six years as a member of the town council. He is also a member of the Scottish Rite, and the Order of Odd Fellows. The family are members at the Saint Paul German Lutheran Church.
