Mr. Helms was a 1935 graduate of Warren High School and a lifelong Huntington County resident and farmer.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and during his service he earned a Bronze Star.
He served as a County Commissioner from 1973-1984. He was a member of Farm Bureau, and Liberty Center Baptist Church, and enjoyed woodworking and board games.
Mr. Helms was born Aug. 9, 1917, in Huntington to Ernest and Vera Manring Helms. His marriage was to Maxine Karrick on March 19, 1941, in Warren. She survives in Warren.
Also surviving are three sons, Lee Helms and Neil Helms, both of Warren; and David Helms of Poneto; and a brother, Max Helms, Huntington.
