He was born in Auburn, the son of Alvin Olin and Miriam Rawlings Merriam. Two wives, Mildred Campbell and Dawson Coblin Merriam, preceded him in death. He later married Jo Anne Sellards. A daughter, Jean Merriam Jones, also preceded him in death.
Mr. Merriam graduated from Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania and Millikin University in Decatur, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a radar officer on the USS St. Paul. He retired as senior vice president and member of the board of directors from Franklin Life Insurance Co. in 1972 after 38 years.
He was a member of Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church, Kiwanis Club and Spindletop Hall of Lexington; associate member of Roser Memorial Community Church in Anna Maria, Fla.; and former member of Sangamon County Lung Association, Springfield Chamber of Commerce Board, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Masons. He was former president of the YMCA Young Men's Board and helped organize and served two terms on the Sangamon County Deputy Sheriff's Merit Commission.
Survivors: wife, Jo Anne; two sons, Henry J. Merriam Jr. and William R. Merriam; seven grandchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.
