DR. OVID LOYOTUS "O.L." BLEDSOE was the son of Mrs. Bettie (Hurd) Bledsoe and Rev. William Felga "W.F." Bledsoe Sr., of Harrison County, Texas.

His known siblings were ---

The young Ovid graduated from Bishop College in 1908, and then from Meharry Medical College in 1912. He returned to Marshall, Texas where he rooted his medical practice, and he would reside in the town for the rest of his life.

He began his medical practice in an office located on the Northwest Public Square in Marshall. He would later join with Dr. G.T. Coleman and Dr. F.E. Williams to establish a clinic on Sanford Street -- providing primary medical care to the African-American community in the city and the surrounding counties.

In 1917, he married Miss Letta Elaine "Lettie" Cary who was a teacher at Bishop College in Harrison County, Texas. They made a home for their family on West Grand Avenue in Marshall, Texas in Harrison County. To their union, two children were born -- Zeta Lorraine Bledsoe and Ovid Loyotus Bledsoe Jr.

His wife, Lettie, preceded him in death.

Later, in 1943, the doctor married Miss Mary Elizabeth Watson who was a librarian at Bishop College. Their marriage remained his last days.

The Bledsoe name was prominent in the African-American history in Texas and throughout the country. The entire Bledsoe family was active in church, education and civic affairs. Moreover, they were most recognized for their tireless support of Bishop College in Texas.

A street in Marshall, Texas is named to honor this family.

DR. OVID LOYOTUS "O.L." BLEDSOE practiced medicine in Marshall for 33 years.

Upon his passing, DR. OVID LOYOTUS "O.L." BLEDSOE was laid to rest on February 25, 1945 on the grounds of Powder Mill Cemetery in Marshall, Texas.

Hayward Funeral Home, as supervised by S.S. Hayward, managed the burial arrangements.

His father was the informant on the death certificate.
