One Of The Founders Of Santa Clara College Passes Away At Los Gatos:
Santa Clara, Nov. 19 - Reverend Father Aloysius Masnata, one of the oldest and most highly respected priests in California, died yesterday at the Jesuit Novitiate College at Los Gatos. Father Masnata was born in the city of Genoa, Italy in 1823. In 1850 he became a member of the Jesuit Order, being ordained to the priesthood in Italy. In 1854 he arrived in California, first settling at the Santa Clara College, being one of the founders of that institution. During his career in California, he has been Superior of the Jesuit Order in California, President of the St. Ignatius College in San Francisco, and for 3 years President of the Santa Clara College. He has also been Superior in San Jose, and served for a number of years as a parish priest in San Francisco, San Jose and Santa Clara. In 1886 he was chosen rector of the Novitiate Jesuit College at Los Gatos, where the novices of the order study for the priesthood. He will be buried from Santa Clara College tomorrow."
