John Woodson Goforth was a son of Civil War veteran and farmer, William Marion Goforth (1823 to 1910) of Tennessee and Missouri and Martha Jane Strother (1854 to 1910) of Arkansas and Missouri. His middle name was taken from the outlaw, Jesse James' middle name and his mother's family, however it is not clear if the Goforth's knew the James and Woodson family in Missouri.

He was the father of Bessie Luella Goforth (1905 to 1999) and two sons (Thomas and Robert) and grandfather to Robert Stanley Willis (buried this same cemetery). In Kansas City around 1900, he was a close friend of Charles Kid McCoy, famous boxer. He was a professional horseman and a trainer for Hollywood movie studios in the 1920s, and was a close friend of Tom Mix -- he trained his horse, Tony the Wonder Horse. John was an accomplished builder of many California Spanish-style homes throughout Los Angeles County and San Bernardino County in the 1930s and 1940s.

His wife was Nora Martha Hartford Goforth (1881 to 1958) of Cobourg Canada, and Kansas City, Missouri/Kansas; she is buried in Redlands, California. He ranched in Corona (Main Street near Grand Avenue) around 1909-20, in Bellflower 1920 to 1930s, and on South Palmetto Street in Bloomington, California, in the 1940s. He and his wife retired in the early 1950s in Bloomington, California.
