He worked in Nixon's 1968 presidential campaign and was co-chairman of California's delegation to the 1980 Republican National Convention. President Nixon appointed him to serve as the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and President Reagan appointed him to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Australia and Nauru from 1981 - 1985.
Robert Nesen received many awards. including being named the "Patriotic Citizen of the Year" when he received the Patrick Henry Patriotism Medallion. In 1994 he was awarded the "World Citizen Award" by Vice President Quayle.
