Services for Walter A. Acker, 43, Piedmont Chief of Police, were held Sunday, November 3 at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Piedmont conducted by Rev. S. N. Strickland, Rev. W. D. Barnes, and Rev. R. E. Hood. Burial was in Highland Cemetery in Piedmont with Colonial Chapel of Anniston directing.

Mr. Acker died Friday morning, November 1, 1946, at William Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia after an illness of several weeks. He was born November 18, 1902, in Cherokee County near Centre and was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church at Key. He held office as Chief of Police since 1939.

Pallbearers were Dave Stewart, Leroy Ledbetter, Tollie Formby, Charlie Smith, William Whitten, D. R. Johnson, and H. O. Farmer. Honorary pallbearers were Mayor Austin Johnson of Piedmont, Millam Howell, Ruel Phillips, Harry Morgan, John Braswell, C. S. Garmon, Austin Deberry, Dr. J. H. Woolf, Bernard Woolf, Dixon Hulsey, J. W. Elliot, W. Y. West, and Cecil Miller of Anniston.

Mr. Acker was survived by his wife, Mrs. Pluma Acker of Piedmont; two daughters, Dorothy Jean Acker and Martha Joe Acker of Piedmont; one son, James Doyle Acker of Piedmont; his father, J. L. Acker of Centre, Rt. 2; four brothers, Orvin Acker of Centre, Roy Acker of Piedmont, Rt. 3, Harvey Acker of Centre, Rt. 2, and Marvin Acker of Centre, Rt. 1; three sisters, Mrs. Bell Wood of Centre, Rt. 2, Miss Liller Acker of Centre, Rt. 2, and Mrs. Vera Weaver of Centre.
