Shirley Jo Fortney Gassnola, age 72 years, a resident of Buckhannon, WV departed this life late Monday evening, May 30, 2016 at her home surrounded by her loving family and under the care of West Virginia Hospice.
She had been in declining health and death was attributed to cancer.
She was born Thursday, March 23, 1944 at Buckhannon, WV a daughter of the late John Dale and Delores Josephine Wright Fortney.
On April 22, 1978 at Tallmansville, WV she was married to Joe Gassnola, who preceded her in death August 17, 2010.
Surviving are four daughters, Angela Jo Vance of Junior, Brenda Lee Mabry of LA Katrina Jane Gallion and husband Buddy of OH, Kimberly Dawn Bowman and husband Steve of TX; one son, Murl Anthony Gassnola of TX; two sisters, Sharon Ann Stackpole of Buckhannon, Alice Charlene Malcolm and husband Donald Fred of Buckhannon; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death is one son, Joseph Allen Gassnola; and one brother, Roger Dale Fortney.
She was a graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School with the Class of 1962.
She enjoyed crafts and traveling to fairs and festivals with her crafts as well as making bracelets for Relay for Life.
She was a member of the Saint Brendan Catholic Church.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 to 8 PM, Sunday.
On Sunday, at 7 PM, at the funeral home a wake service will be recited.
Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel, Monday, June 6, 2016 at 11 AM.
The Very Rev. Donald X. Higgs, VF will officiate and interment will follow at the Saint Brendan Cemetery at Elkins, WV.
