Darrell Salter, 69, died Monday, March 31, 2003. Darrell Keith Salter was born on Sept. 29, 1933, at Huron, to Boyd "Jim" and Hazel "K.C." (Wenger) Salter. He attended school in Iroquois and graduated from Iroquois High School in 1951. Although only 17 years old, he enlisted in the US Navy and served on active duty during the Korean Conflict until 1954. He later served in the South Dakota National Guard and attained the highest Army enlisted rank of sergeant major. Nevertheless, he always considered himself a sailor. On April 1, 1956, he married Arlene Corcoran at St. Martin Catholic Church, Huron. After graduating from Huron College, he taught English in Selby and Bryant before becoming a school administrator. Darrell served as the superintendent of schools in Erwin, Wolsey, Wessington Springs, and in Parker, where he retired in 1994. During his thirty-five year professional career, Darrell earnestly continued his formal education. He received his masters degree from South Dakota State University and he earned a doctoral degree in education from the University of South Dakota in 1986. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his keen intellect and his deep sense of patriotism and public service. Darrell served for over 30 years as a volunteer with the South Dakota American Legion Boys State program, acting as its director for the past 10 years. He was also an active member of a number of community boards and organizations. Darrell was a proud member of the American Legion, VFW, the Beadle Club, Knights of Columbus, and St. Christina Catholic Church, Parker. He was loved and revered by his family as a patient, caring and selfless man. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 47 years, Arlene; three children, six grandchildren, and a sister, Shirley. He was preceded in death by his parents. Services were held on Thursday, April 3, at St. Christina Catholic Church in Parker. Burial with full military honors was in St. Martin Catholic Cemetery in Huron. Arrangements were made by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home of Parker.
