Clara Barnes NEWTON Clara Belle Wiggs Barnes, 80, of Newton, passed away Sunday, June 22, 2014 at Abernethy Laurels. Clara was born in Johnston County, Oct. 1, 1933. She was the daughter of the late James Hubert and Mary Ophelia Wiggs of Princeton, N.C. She and husband, Johnnie, moved their family to the Conover area in 1959 and has resided here ever since. Clara first worked in the hosiery industry and then worked for Regency Bedspread where she retired from after 30 years of service. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Barnes; daughter, Irene Barnes Sharpe; sister, Grace Howell; and brothers, Tom Wiggs and Rudolph Wiggs. Survivors include her children, Franklin Barnes and wife, Joyce of Goldsboro, Vickie Lay and husband, Danny of Conover, Doug Barnes of Conover and Teresa Huffman of Newton; son-in-law, J.D. (Pete) Sharpe; grandchildren, Marty and Michael Sharpe, Dawn Barnes, Christie Huffman and Clint Lay, Sandy and Mark Barnes, Alex Barnes and Leslie Huffman; and a number of great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Ed Wiggs and wife, Frances of Goldsboro and Leamon Wiggs and wife, Sylvia of Goldsboro; and sister-in-law, Jean Wiggs of Selma. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 25, at Catawba Funerals & Cremations at 12:30 p.m. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park.
