Benjamin O. Edwards was born in Mississippi, the son of Maryland born Joseph W. Edwards and South Carolina born Elizabeth D. Edwards. I don't yet know Elizabeth's maiden name. The Edwards family was listed in Mississippi in both the 1850 U. S. Census and the 1870 U. S. Census. By 1870 the family consisted of the parents and children Benjamin O., 24, Mary M., 22, John R., 19, and Frances 'Fanny' E., 14.

Sometime shortly after 1870 the family moved to Girard, Richland Parish, Louisiana, where Benjamin married Jennie Moore, daughter of Dr, Madison Tyler Moore and Mary Emily Webb Moore, and Ben's sister, Fanny, married Charles Perry Balfour, son of Charles R. Balfour and Catherine Hudnall Balfour. Fanny Edwards Balfour gave birth to a son, Joseph R. Balfour, on March 22, 1874, and then died on June 19, 1874. Her son, Joseph R. Balfour, died July 16, 1877, at age 3.

Joseph W. Edwards, his wife, Elizabeth, and his son John R. Edwards were living in Girard, Richland Parish, Louisiana in 1880 and Benjamin Edwards and wife Jennie were living nearby in the household of Catherine H. Balfour and son Charles Perry Balfour. In October of 1880 Charles Perry Balfour married for the second time, to Lulu Lethea Moore, youngest sister of Benjamin O. Edwards' wife, Jennie.

According to his obituary in the Richland Beacon-News, Benjamin O. Edwards died at 7 o'clock in the morning in Girard, Louisiana: the members of the Knights of Pythias of C. P. Balfour Lodge conveyed his body for interment to New Salem Cemetery.

He was survived by his wife but no children.

I looked for the graves of Benjamin and his wife, Jennie, when I visited New Salem Cemetery and I did not find either one. They are buried there but either they never had grave stones or their stones are gone. I also did not find a grave marker for baby Joseph R. Balfour or for Benjamin's mother Elizabeth D. Edwards. She was alive in 1910 in Rayville, La.

All dates and obituary information was found in the book GRANNY BESS by Moses M. Coleman, Jr.
