Anna Katherine Rigdon Norman

Flowood, MS

"You may break, you may shatter the vase, if you will,

But the scent of the roses will hang round it still." (Thomas Moore)

Anna Katherine Rigdon Norman was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on February 8, 1980, and died at Madigan Army Hospital in Tacoma, Washington, on May 20, 2016, after a life well lived, a battle well fought, and a job well done. We are truly grateful for her life and love, and that she has now been freed from pain, her spirit now free to fill the hole left in our hearts. May we follow her example and live our lives with the same grace and love for everyone. If we do, what a wonderful world this will be.

Anna developed a love of travel and new experiences during childhood as her father's career took them from Jackson to the US Naval Hospital in Iceland, and later to Laurel, MS, and Columbus, OH, before finally settling in Flowood, MS. Anna was a 1998 Honor Graduate of Northwest Rankin High School in Flowood, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and the Beta Club. She played flute in the Cougar Marching Band, serving as drum major for two years, and also played in the Mississippi Youth Symphony Orchestra. She excelled as a soprano. She was a member of the choir of St. Philips Episcopal Church, Jackson, MS, and was a member of the Children's Choir of Mississippi, being thrilled to have the opportunity to sing in Carnegie Hall and in the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. She also loved being in musical plays. She was a member of the Mississippi State Society, Children of the American Revolution, serving as State President, and was a member of the Chief Red Jacket Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution.

Anna graduated cum laude from Mississippi State University in 2002, with a degree in mathematics and French. She was a member of the MSU Choir, Jazz Ensemble, and Madrigal Singers, and was a member of the choir of the Church of the Resurrection in Starkville. Anna enjoyed her studies abroad at universities in Quebec, Canada, and Dijon, France. She would have been pleased to know that she passed away on a Maroon Friday, surrounded by family and friends in the appropriate attire.

Anna could have been anything she wanted to be. What mattered most to her was being part of a family and having one of her own. While at an MSU football game she met Jordan Norman, a young Air Force Lieutenant from Smyrna, Tennessee. She asked her father if someone could fall in love and know he was "Mr. Right" after just a few dates. His answer was for most people probably not, but in her case the answer was yes, because he considered her judgement to be impeccable and his confidence in her was absolute. On December 28, 2002, Anna and Jordan were married at St. Philips, where she had been baptized. During their life together, Anna and Jordan enjoyed living at Charleston AFB, SC, where Anna taught math at Goose Creek High School, later moving to McGuire AFB, NJ, Maxwell AFB, AL, Scott AFB, IL, and finally to McChord AFB, Tacoma, WA. She died just a few weeks before Jordan is to assume his first squadron command. She would have dearly loved to be there to support Jordan and the airmen and families under his command, but it was not to be.

Anna faced her five-year illness with dignity, serenity, grace and determination, always being her normal, cheerful and loving self. She worked incessantly loving, enjoying, educating, and preparing her children for the future. She never complained or wanted pity even in the darkest hours. She received the best possible medical care everywhere she lived, and her family will be forever grateful for the compassion given by all of her doctors, nurses, chaplains and others. She could not have passed away in a more caring place than Madigan Army Hospital.

Anna was preceded in death by grandparents, Captain Jack R.# 29825983 and Anna E. Kersh # 29825964
.

Anna is survived by her husband, Lt. Colonel Jordan Patrick Norman, USAF; and their children, Richard Rigdon Norman, Henry James Norman, and Elizabeth Anne Norman. She is also survived by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Edward E. Rigdon of Flowood, MS; brother, John (wife, Jennifer and children, Chesney, Bryce and Ansley Kate) of Starkville, MS; sister, Ashley Elizabeth of Flowood, MS; grandparents L.K. and Betty Rigdon of Quitman, MS; parents-in-law, Richard and Teresa Mansfield of Smyrna, TN, and Tim Norman, of Muscle Shoals, AL; and a great circle of extended family and friends.

A celebration of Anna's life will be held at Chapel #1, McCord AFB, at 3:00 PM on May 26th. A burial service will be held at St. Philips Episcopal Church in Jackson, MS, at a date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, Anna wished that memorials in her honor be donated to a cancer research fund or children's charity of ones choice.
