Dale R. Strohbehn, age 95, of Glendale, Arizona, formerly of Council Bluffs, passed away May 25, 2016, in Glendale.
Visitation will be 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 29, at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home in Council Bluffs. Memorials may be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church or the American Legion Post #2 Honor Guard in his memory.
Funeral services will follow the visitation at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 29, at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel in Council Bluffs, with The Reverend Robert Abbott officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Council Bluffs, Iowa, with Military Rites conducted by the American Legion Post #2.
Dale Robert Strohbehn was born February 28, 1921, in Treynor, the son of Herman and Lillie (Trede) Strohbehn. He graduated from Treynor High School in 1938 and attended Iowa State University for only one year. When Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941, he left college to work at an aircraft factory in San Diego, California. He felt it was his duty to join the war effort like his brothers. He proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corp and became a radio operator and waist gunner on a B24 bomber and flew 39 missions in the China/Burma/India areas. Following his discharge from service, he returned home. He married Gretchen Laverne Everhart on November 24, 1946, in Council Bluffs. He was employed with Farm Co-Op in Council Bluffs for 27 years and then transferred to Farm Co-Op in Ft. Collins, Colorado, for another nine years, until he retired in May of 1983. The couple later made their home in Glendale, Arizona. He was a member St. Mark's United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #2, serving in the honor guard for 25 years.
Surviving are his wife, Gretchen; one daughter, Roxanne (John) Philip of Omaha, NE; two sons, Robert (Barbara) Strohbehn of Glendale, AZ, and Randall (Lynette) Strohbehn of Council Bluffs; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Joanne Miller; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Douglas and Ward Strohbehn and one brother-in-law, Dr. Gordon Miller.
