died Thursday, May 26, 2016 at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Missouri, surrounded by her loving family, following a sudden and brief illness. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, Missouri with visitation from 2:00-3:00.

Courtney was born in Harrisonville, Missouri, where she lived for most of her life. Soon after she was born, she revealed how special she would be, as her onset of seizures took her and her family on a long and unknown journey. But through it all, Courtney always had a beautiful smile and laugh for all the people she loved and loved her in return. She loved to swim, to go for a ride in the car, to go to Grandma’s house, to watch her nieces, to play with balls and balloons, and to go to Sonic. She loved her music, dancing and squealing with delight whenever "Bruce" sang her favorite, "Born in the USA".

Courtney attended Briarwood State School in Harrisonville from the age of 5 until she graduated in May 2003. She made many amazing friends that shared in so many of her accomplishments over the years. Courtney recently made her home with TNC Community at The Englewood Group Home. She touched the hearts of everyone she met with her beautiful smile and her own individual personality.

Raising a child as special as Courtney was not without its challenges, but throughout them all she always had a loving smile, mischievous twinkle in her eye, or an infectious giggle. Her love was genuine and pure throughout her life and she loved many as they loved her in return. She will be missed so much by so many as the confines of this earthly life have been released from her. She can now be free from her fragile little body which has been wracked by seizures for so many years. Free for her spirit to soar, and according to Hailey, free to be a 'Butterfly' if she so chooses.

Courtney was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Bill Davis, her dear cousin, Dennis Wayne Schmidt, and her maternal great-grandmother, Helen Marie Davis. She is survived by her father, Donald Leo Schmidt of Harrisonville; her mother, Deborah Ann Mercer Schmidt of Overland Park, Kansas; her sisters, Wanda Christine Parham (Jeff), Delilah Marie Schmidt (Chet), and Danielle Dawn Schmidt, brother, Russell Don Schmidt, her nephew, Jacob Don Schmidt (Andi), all of Harrisonville, Missouri; and her nieces, Samantha Renee (Brent), Van Alstyne, Texas, Hailey Ann Marie, Isabella Dawn, and Kenzie Michelle, all of Harrisonville; her maternal grandmother, Jackie Smith, Drexel, Missouri; step-grandmother, Karen Davis, Kansas City, Missouri, and a host of uncles, aunts, and cousins, as well as her extended family and loving friends.
