Betty Sue was the daughter of Walter "Paw Paw" and Bessie Irene Wells. She had three siblings. She grew up in "the wilds of Appalachia, where the toilet was an outhouse” according to her son Johnny, in Rolling Stone in 2013.

She had two children by her first husband: Danny and Debbie. She worked as a waitress, in Miramar, Florida, in the 1970's, while married to John Christopher Depp I. She divorced John Depp about June 8, 1981. She married Robert William Haley February 2, 1987. She married Robert "Bob" W. Palmer and lived in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada around 1990. In 1995 she relocated to a ranch in Prestonsburg, Kentucky. In her later years she lived in Los Angeles, California, with her son Johnny where she battled cancer.

Betty Sue is survived by her children: Daniel P. Depp of California, Debra J of Kentucky, Elisa Christie Dembrowski, and John Christopher "Johnny" Depp II of California; at least eight grandchildren including: Megan, Lily-Rose Melody Depp of California and John Christopher "Jack" Depp III of California: and at least one great grandchild.

A memorial was held on June 29, 2016, in Los Angeles, for friends and family to celebrate her life.
