Sam was born in Toro, Louisiana to Ollie Pynes and Effie Sanders Pynes. He was the third of eight children. His siblings were Harvey, Odessa (Presley), Velma (Newman), Ed (Jerry Horn),Herbert, James Ray (Edna Williams), William Roy (Virginia Withrow). He grew up on the family homestead in Toro, Louisiana. The family moved from Louisiana to McNary Arizona in 1924. He married Sally Vick Pynes in White River, Arizona. They moved to Oregon in 1929. He was employed by the Edward Hines Lumber Company as a Railroad Engineer. The family lived in Seneca, Oregon. In 1944 the family moved to Eugene where Sam was employed by the Southern Pacific Railroad until his retirement. He was a life member of the BPOE. He enjoyed rock collecting, polishing & cutting rocks and jewelry & metalsmithing. He was a skilled fisherman spending time at the family beach house in Yachats. Sam and Sally were the parents of: George, Phil, Jack, Sue & Fred Pynes. Sam & Sally are at rest in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
