Born May 27 1930, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Mitchell Horton and Addie forester Carroll.
Mr Carroll was a retired truck driver from Shuford Mills.
He was an avid woodworker and cabinet Maker. He was a loving father and grandfather.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Martha Russell Carroll, two brothers, Paul and M H Carroll and one sister Virginia Bolton.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, James R Carroll and wife Robin of Claremont four daughters and sons-in-law Barbara Pruitt & husband Clyde of Boomer NC, Sharon A Carroll and Linda Townsend & husband Nick all of Hickory and Brenda Lail & husband Tim, of Taylorsville, Patricia Carroll & husband Barry Walker of Hickory, 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren and three sisters; Betty Flowers, Dorothy Killian and Helen Caldwell.
The funeral service was held on Tuesday May 28 2002 at Hickory Funeral Home Chapel and was conducted by Rev Jay Johnson.
Burial followed in Catawba Memorial Park with military graveside rites by American Legion Post 48 in Hickory.
Pallbearers were Chad Carpenter, Chris Carpenter, Charlie Carpenter, Jason Lail, Jamie Carroll, Ashley Cline and Jeremy Cline.
