Elizabeth Sewall Higginson was the second wife of the Rev. Reuel Keith, S.T.D., a Professor of Systematic Divinity at the Alexandria Theological Seminary from 1823 to 1842. He was born in Pittsford, Vermont on June 26, 1792, and died in Sheldon, Vermont, in early September 1842. His date of death is given variously as September 1, 2 or 3. Elizabeth and Reuel Keith married on August 16, 1831.

Reuel Keith's first wife was Mariette Cleveland who was born on January 15, 1796, Guilford, Connecticut, and died April 5 or 16, 1830, Charleston, South Carolina. They married on December 3, 1817, in Middlebury, Vermont.

Inscription

"Beneath this stone [are] the mortal remains of / Elizabeth Sewall Keith / the beloved wife of the / Rev. Ruel Keith, D.D.S.T.D. / and grand daughter of / Stephen Higginson, Jun., [late] of Baltimore, Md. / died Dec. 16, 1840, aged 42 years."

Gravesite Details

Tablet marker. Surveyor in 1992 reported that the lengthy inscription was mostly illegible.
