Vernon Douglas Fowler, of Niceville, FL passed away May 13 at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. He died unexpectedly of complications following heart surgery. Vernon was born Jan. 5, 1943 in Newburyport, MA, the 7th child of Andrew Howard and Harriet Merrill Fowler of Salisbury, MA. He was predeceased by his parents and all 6 of his siblings.
Vernon is survived by his loving wife Sandra, his son, Howard & Myra Fowler, of Navarre, his daughter, Barbara & Matthew Hecht, of Maryville, TN. He also leaves his stepdaughter, Kathi & Gary Heapy, of Shalimar and stepson Jay Murphy of Middleburg, FL. Nine wonderful grandchildren will mourn their Papa: Adam & wife Amanda and Justin Brown, Elizabeth, Rebekah & John Fowler, Nick & wife Allie, Mary, and Erin Heapy, and Renee Murphy. Great-grandchildren, Landon & Reagan Brown have added joy to Vernon's life. His dear nieces and nephews will miss his wit and wisdom as well.
Vernon enlisted in the US Army in 1960, serving primarily at Ft. Campbell, KY. After military service, Vernon attended the New Hampshire State Police Academy and began a 22-year career as a NH State Trooper. He attained a degree in Criminal Justice at St. Anselm College in Manchester, NH. Upon retirement from NHSP, Vernon settled in northwest Florida and turned a hobby into a business as proprietor of Timely Clock Repair. He and Sandi met while singing in the Ft. Walton Beach Community Chorus and enjoyed 24 years of music, family and travel together.
Vernon was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Emerald Coast in Valparaiso, the Loyal Order of Elks, #1795 in FWB, and the NH Retired State Troopers Assn. Vernon was a dedicated volunteer at Sharing and Caring in Niceville.
Memorial donations may be made to Alpha-1 Foundation at www.alpha1.org or to the UUFEC at www.uufec.com. Family and friends will gather in October for a celebration of Vernon's life here on the Emerald Coast.
