Edward Collins was born in Pike County, Kentucky (other sources name Johnson County, Kentucky and Matewan, West Virginia) to Peter Collins and Elizabeth Hall Collins. He was the paternal grandson of Nancy Collins Hager and maternal grandson of John Martin Hall and Susan Goble Hall.

According to the United States 1900 Census, Peter Collins and his son "Eddie" (aged 4) were living at the residence of their cousin Mitchell Perry of Martin County, Kentucky.

In the census record for 1910, Peter Collins was listed as head of household in Whitehouse, Kentucky (Johnson County) with wife Anna Collins, son Edward (aged thirteen) and stepchildren John, Martha and Maggie and Joseph Dutton.

Edward was the first husband of Effie Ward (espoused on April 21, 1917 in Martin County, Kentucky). Jesse Collins and William Henry Collins were their children.

Edward married Dora Mae Collins on October 31, 1923 in Pikeville, Pike County, Kentucky with whom he had at least nine children.

Edward's World War I draft application from June of 1918 shows that he was a resident of Standard, Kanawha County, West Virginia and employed with a coal mining company. Peter Collins is named as his nearest relative with his address being Boons Camp, Kentucky.

Edward passed away at the age of sixty from a coronary occlusion on March 6, 1958 in the Martin County Courthouse, Inez, Kentucky. He was buried in the Dennie Pigg Cemetery in Boons Camp, Johnson County, Kentucky.
