Darrell, 83, went to be with the Lord at the Charlotte Eaton Palliative Care in Charlotte, May 24, 2016. He was born to Harold and Thelma (Miles) Hicks.

His parents, baby Dwane and brother Jack all preceded him in death.

Darrell was a 1950 Charlotte Graduate and went to LCC to train as a brick mason. Darrell (Tink) was a brick mason and building contractor for 64 years having worked on many buildings at MSU and in Lansing as well as in the local area. He was a building contractor and built many homes and churches in the local area.

Darrell is survived by his wife, Virginia (Hisler) of 62 years; Daughters, Julie (Jerry) Carpenter, Kathi Hicks and Kristi (Brian) Klaiss; Son, Jeff Hicks; Six grandchildren, Michael (Jessica) Carpenter, Matt (Chelsea) Carpenter, Samantha Carpenter, Kaitlyn Carpenter, Kara (Jim) Jones and Nick Davis.Two great grandchildren, Braden and Tyler Carpenter; His brothers, Richard, Dale (Carol Jean), Bob (Rhonda) and Bruce (Tonya); Sisters, Phyllis Moore, Shirley Collins and Janette Lewis; many nieces and nephews and Sisters-in-law, Charlotte Dowding and Dorma Hisler.

Darrell loved nature and being outside walking in the woods with his two dogs. He was a great gardener. Playing golf was his passion and he enjoyed meeting with his friends at the Eaton Place, and also visiting with old friends. He never really retired and continued to do smaller jobs until he became ill.

He was a Meals On Wheels volunteer for many years, was a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church in Charlotte, was a Civil War history buff and was very knowledgable about World War II.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 28, 2016 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte with Rev. Gary Wales officiating. Interment was in the Kalamo Hillside Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, Meals On Wheels, The Charlotte Library or Eaton Community Palliative Care.
