Jane Calderwood Carver was the daughter of Rueben T. Carver (1797-1890) and Hannah Calderwood (1798-1856). Her grandfather Thaddeus Carver was one of the first settlers of Vinalhaven. On 24 December 1840, she married George Washington Smith (1814-1897), and they had eight children: Reuben Carver, b. 1841; Leander Bradford, b. 1843; Charles B., b. 1845; George Frederick, b. 1851; Jennie Hannah, b. 1856; Maria Celeste, b. 1859; Eugene Leslie, b. 1860; and Lafayette C., b. 1863.

In 1890, a newspaper carried the story of George's and Jane's 50th wedding anniversary, making note that all 8 of their children were still living. Jane died of hepatitis in 14 December 1896; George died less than three months later in March of 1897. They are both buried in John Carver Cemetery.
