Leander Bradford Smith was the son of George Washington Smith and Jane Calderwood Carver. He married three times; his first wife was Sarah Frances Ames (1850-1898), whom he married 15 December 1867 in North Haven, Maine. They had 4 children: Bertha Etta, born 1870; Minnie Carver, b. 1872; Orrin Frederick, b. 1877; and an unnamed daughter born 15 March 1880, died 15 April 1880. His second wife was Aldanah Crocker (Dyer) Thomas (1846-1907). They were married on 28 March 1900 in North Haven, Maine. They had no children, though she had 3 adult children from her first marriage to David V. Thomas. His third wife was Almeda Oroville (Grant) Wooster, whom he married 21 April 1909 in North Haven, Maine. They had no children, though Almeda had two adult children from her first marriage to Nathaniel Wooster.

He worked at times as a farmer, fisherman, and butcher. After the death of his third wife, he went to live with his son Orrin in Owls Head, Maine. He died in Rockland in 1931.
