Born in 1912 to James and Mary King in Newfoundland, Canada, she moved to Brooklyn as a young woman, where she trained as a hairdresser. Upon retirement in 1970, she moved to Southampton and worked at Hildreth's Department Store in the dry goods department for 22 years.
A member of the North Sea Community Association and Sacred Hearts Altar Rosary Society, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing and baking. Also an avid reader, in recent years she participated in the winter reading club at Rogers Memorial Library.
Mrs. Cumby is survived by a daughter, Linda McClain and husband Mark of Southampton; a sister, Anita Murphy, and a brother, Anthony King, both of Newfoundland; and four grandchildren, Colleen, Maureen and Daniel McClain and Erin Tumbarello. Her husband, Daniel Cumby, predeceased her in 1982.
Visitation was held on March 11 at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. A funeral mass was held on March 12 at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church in Southampton. Interment followed at Sacred Hearts Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978 would be appreciated by the family.
