Helen Freeman was born in Taylorville, Illinois on June 28, 1903, to Thomas and Estella (Hafliger) Jones.

She was baptized a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on her birthday in 1911 and served her church in a faithful and dedicated way until her death.

Helen attended Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois, and there met and married Arthur William Freeman. To this union were born four children; the first dying at birth. Most of her married life was spent in the Chicago area, until Arthur retired in 1960 and they moved to Huntsville, Missouri. No matter where they lived, Helen and Art enjoyed a common hobby of gardening. Their greatest joy always came when they shared the flowers and produce with others.

In 1968 Helen and Art moved to Lamoni, Iowa. Even though Helen felt a great loss at the passing of her husband in 1970, she didn't give up but turned her efforts once again to giving her time to the welfare of others by working daily at the Lamoni Stake Service Center.

Even after cancer surgery in 1980, she returned to the center for another three years of service. Helen never felt comfortable unless she was doing something for someone else. When she would leave the service center and go to the meal site for lunch, she would hurry through her meal so she could help in the kitchen before returning to work.

Helen sang in the choir and served on the Colony Housing Board from its beginning. As a result of her years of service to the community she was recognized as Outstanding Senior Citizen in Iowa in 1982 at a ceremony in Afton, Iowa. Indeed, service was her life.

Helen passed away in Des Moines on October 11, 1983. She is preceded in death by her husband and three brothers.

She is survived by her sister, Alberta Giovagnoli of Taylorville, Illinois, a daughter, Shirley Anderson of Homewood, Illinois, sons, Richard of Nekoosa, Wisconsin, and Tom of Lamoni, Iowa. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Saturday, October 15, 1983, at Rosehill Cemetery in Lamoni. Elders Robert Bruch and Bruce Graybill officiated.
