British Nobility. The 1st Duke of Buckingham. A favourite of James I, he rose rapidly to power after the eclipse of the former favourite, Robert Carr. He played a prominent role in the government. When Charles I came to the throne, he became his principal adviser. He was assassinated at Portsmouth before embarking for La Rochelle by John Felton, a disaffected seaman.
