Herbert Snavely Hess, 95, formerly of Quarryville and, more recently, Millersville, went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 22. He was born March 16, 1921, in Oregon, Pennsylvania, the oldest child of the late Norman and Helen Snavely Hess.

Herb grew up on Green Meadows Farm near Oregon, attending school in Manheim Township. In 1942, he married Sara Burk-holder Hess, of Akron. The following year, they moved to Runnymede Farm south of Quarryville, where they farmed, raised seven children, and operated a bed and breakfast. He worked as a flock manager for De Kalb Hatchery for 15 years. They were active members of Mechanic Grove Mennonite Church. In 2005, they moved to Millersville and in 2015 to Oak Leaf Manor in Landisville. They celebrated their 73rd anniversary in November, 2015.

He is survived by: his wife; children: Judith, wife of Mark Nord of Hyattsville, Maryland, Carol, wife of Jay Mylin of Manheim, Linda, wife of Roy Musser of Willow Street, Herbert L., husband of Beth (Good) of Millersville, Debra, wife of Robert Detwiler of Millersville, Marcia, wife of John Harnish of Quarryville, and Brent, husband of Julie (Charles) of Lancaster; 14 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and sisters: Elizabeth Landis Evans of Manheim and Jane Landis of Lancas-ter.

He was preceded in death by brothers: Edward Hess and Arthur Hess; sister, Mary Catherine; and grandson, Christian Detwiler.

He died peacefully at Oak Leaf Manor in Landisville, surrounded by family.

Services will be held on Friday, May 27, 2016 at Refton Brethren in Christ Church, 110 Church St., Refton, PA at 2:00 PM. Friends will have the opportunity to greet the family immediately following the service. There will be a public viewing on Thursday evening at the church from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. A private family interment will be in Mechanic Grove Mennonite Cemetery.
