Patti Callaway Young, 91, of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of Ellisville, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, in Atlanta. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday at First Methodist Church in Ellisville, with burial in Ellisville Cemetery. The Revs. Jimmy Ormon and John Kramer will officiate. She was born on Febr. 27, 1911, in Oxford, Mississippi, the fourth child of James Stephen and Leona White Callaway. The family moved to Ellisville, Mississippi where she graduated from Jones County Agricultural High School. She attended Judson College in Marion, Alabama where she graduated Cum Laude, was elected President of her senior class and received the prestigious Balfour Award for the most outstanding graduate her senior year. Following a number of years teaching elementary school, she married James Bonnard Young. Dr. Young served as president of Jones County Junior College from 1940 until his retirement in 1970. During her more than 40 years of involvement in the college and community, she was an active member of the Ellisville Methodist Church, where she held many positions of responsibility, including teaching Sunday School and serving on the Administrative Board. An accomplished musician, she taught piano, directed many choirs and played for countless weddings and funerals in Ellisville and the surrounding area. She was Chairman of the Board of the Wesley Foundation of Jones County Junior College for many years. She was a member of the Jones County Music Teachers' Association and the Mississippi Music Teachers' Association. A long time member of the Maids and Matrons Culture Club of Ellisville, she served as its president on more than one occasion. She was named Jones County Junior College's Honor Alumna in 1977, having attended the Agricultural High School and Junior College. She had lived in Atlanta since 1993, residing at the Wesley Woods Towers Retirement Center until failing health necessitated her move to the A.G. Rhodes Cobb Nursing Home in Marietta in June of this year. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. J. B. Young; one granddaughter, Mary Patricia Langford; one brother; and two sisters. She is survived by one daughter, Beverly Young Langford; a granddaughter, Leslie Young Langford; and son-in-law, Charles Price Boyd, all of Atlanta, Ga. She is also survived by nieces, Ellen Y Gunn of Ellisville, Bettye Jane Kerby of Columbus, Patti Burnham of Houston, Texas, Mary Rowell of Kerrville, Texas, Carmen Callan of Southampton, New Jersey and nephews, James R. Allen of Summit and Lt. Col. (Ret.) Edward G. Latham of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, along with a large number of great nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to make donations to the Mary Patricia Langford Memorial Scholarship Fund; the Community Fund for Greater Atlanta, Inc.; Suite 449; 50 Hurt Plaza; Atlanta, Ga. 30303. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m., Sunday, at Jones Funeral Home in Ellisville and from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m., Monday at Jones Funeral Home in Ellisville, which is in charge of arrangements.
