Vernon Hankins, 93, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away early Monday morning, May 16, 2016 at his home.

Born June 30, 1922 in Dexter, Kansas, he was the son of Charles and Madelsa (Thompson) Hankins. He was raised and received his education in Dexter, graduating from Dexter High School. He joined the United States Army on November 16, 1942 and proudly served his country in the 104th Infantry during WWII. He was honorably discharged on November 26, 1945.

Vernon was united in marriage to Velma I. Dowler on August 8, 1954. The couple made their home in Winfield. Vernon worked for the Veteran Cab Company for ten years and then for Winfield Motor Company from 1962 to 1995. He retired as a sales manager. Velma preceded him in death on August 4, 2013.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and was involved in Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed bowling and was an avid woodworker. He attended the Farmer’s Market with his wood working projects.

His family includes: His son: Clinton Hankins of Wichita; and His grandsons: Daniel Hankins and wife, Amber and Austin Hankins.

In addition to his parents and wife, Vernon was preceded in death by his brothers, Carl and Cleo, sisters, Flora Booth, Fern Steward, Avis Rhodd, Martha Welch and Winnie Brubaker and his sister-in-law, Silver Hankins.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment and Military Committal Honors will follow at the Dexter Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 6 to 8 that evening.

Memorials have been established in Vernon’s name for the Cowley County Humane Society and for Chaplain Nature Center. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
