Mr Godby was a Union soldier in the Civil War, Co I 49th Kentucky INF.

Civil War Veteran, Calvin Godby, dies. Calvin Freeman Godby, Civil War Veteran, and one of Pulaski's best known citizens, died at his home at Northfield Thursday.

Mr. Godby was born in this county March 18,1846, and spent his entire life in the county. He was a member of the Zion Baptist Church the greater part of his life, and was a true and devoted Christian.

He volunteered in the services of the Union Army and joined the 37th Kentucky Infantry August 24, 1863. He was honorably discharged December 26, 1864. He and Miss Sisley Jane McPheron were married shortly after the war. She preceded him to the grave twenty years ago. To this union were born ten children, only three of whom survived, one son and two daughters, Mrs. Charity Gibson of Burnside, and Mrs. Addie White of Pisgah. He is also survived by 27 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn his passing.

He had been in declining health for several years but bore his suffering patiently and with great fortitude, always expressing the belief that when through with this world there would be a better place for him where there would be no suffering or heartaches. For many years he was a correspondent for this newspaper and whenever he came to Somerset he always paid this office a welcomed visit. He was a staunch Republican. His word was as good as his bond. He was engaged in farming for many years and was on of the county's most useful citizens.

The funeral service was held Saturday morning at the Northfield church, Rev. Wesley Colyer officiating. Interment was in the Love Cemetery.

Commonwealth of Somerset, July 26, 1933.
