Born December 18, 1915 in Pittsylvania County she was a daughter of the late William Sydnor Shelton and Virginia Bethel Shelton.

She was predeceased by her husband, James Odell Phillips; two sons-in-law, Jimmy Hiler and Willard Shelton; a grandchild, Susan Smith; a sister, Virginia Reynolds; and five brothers, Douglas Shelton, Garolyn Shelton, Ollis “Monk” Shelton, Neville Shelton and Otis Shelton.
