DR. GEORGE COLLINS, WELL KNOWN AVON PHYSICIAN, DIES

AVON, April 27—-Dr. George Robert Collins died unexpectedly at his home in East Main Street, today (April 27, 1955). His son, Dr. Richard Collins, was summoned, but the elder Dr. Collins died shortly after his son's arrival.

He is survived by his wife; six sons, John, Dr. Richard, Charles, David, Paul and Bernard Collins; five daughters, Mrs. Robert Kelley, R.N. of Springfield, Mass., Mrs. Duane Westfall, Avon, Mrs. George Cullinan, Avon, Mrs. Robert Warren, R.N., Rochester, and Miss Marcia Collins.

The funeral will be held at St. Agnes Church Saturday morning, the Rev. Father Charles E. Muckle officiating. Burial will be in Allegheny, opposite St. Bonaventure, where he received his pre-medical training.

Dr. Collins, whose son, Richard, was associated with him in practice in Avon, has been in good health. He was born in Austin, Pa., Sept. 28, 1888, son of Daniel Collins and Mary Stenson Collins. Following high school in that place, he had two years of pre-medical at St. Bonaventure College in Allegheny, N.Y., graduating from the University of Buffalo Medical School in 1912. He did his interning at Moses Taylor Hospital, during which period he was surgeon at the Lackawana Steel plant. Coming to Avon in 1914 to assist Dr. F. A. Strasenburgh, who was ill, he later established his own practice here. On January 12, 1915, he married Elizabeth M. Mohan daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Mohan of Portville, N.Y.

For several years he was a member of the board of education of Avon Central School, and was for many years its school physician. He was health officer for both town and village of Avon, ans a trustee of St. Agnes Church. He was also a member of the Rochester Academy of Medicine, past member of the Livingston County Medical Society, Medical Society of New York State, American Medical Association.

Dr. George Collins Dies at Avon Home

AVON — Funeral services for Dr. George R. Collins, who died on Wednesday (April 27, 1955) at Avon, were conducted Saturday (April 30, 1955) at 9:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Church. Burial followed at about 12:30 at St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.

The body was taken to the family home, 25 E. Main Street, Avon, where friends could call from 2 to 4 p.m., and from 7 to 8 p.m., and where services were held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

Surviving are his wife. Mrs. Elizabeth Mohan Collins; five daughters, Mrs. Robert Kelley, Springfield, Mass.; Mrs. Robert Warren, Rochester; Mrs. Duane Westfall, Mrs. George Cullinan, and Miss Marcia Collins, all of Avon; six sons, John Collins, Richard Collins, Charles Collins, David Collins, Paul Collins and Bernard Collins, all of Avon; twenty grandchildren; two sisters, Miss Mabel Collins and Miss Esther Collins, both of Austin; and two brothers, John Collins, Austin, and Clarence Collins, Williamsport. Mrs. Collins is the former Miss Bessie Mohan, a resident of Portville.

Collins-Mohan

The wedding of Miss Mary Elizabeth Mohan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Mohan of this place to Dr. George Collins of Avon, N. Y., took place at ten thirty o'clock at the Sacred Heart Church Tuesday (1/12). The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Father Colligan.

The church was prettily decorated with white carnations and smilax. The bride wore a suit of wisteria velvet and black picture hat, she carried her prayer book and rosary. Miss Teresa Mohan, sister of the bride was maid of honor, and was gowned in a blue suit. Mr. Clarence Collins, brother of the groom was best man.

Immediately following the ceremony a breakfast and reception was held at the bride’s home. The house decorations, being pink roses.

Dr. and Mrs. Collins left amid a shower of rice and good wishes for a wedding trip and will be at home after March first at Avon, N. Y.

The out of town guests were: Mr. Daniel Collins, Mr. Clarence Collins, Miss Mable and Miss Esther Collins of Austin; Miss Marie Heberly of Buffalo; Rev. P. W. O'Brien of Austin; Rev. Father D'arey of Avon, add Miss Maude Thornton of Wellsville.
