Willie Ray "W.R." Abbott, 78, of Bedford, Ky., died Friday, Oct. 20, 2006, at Baptist Hospital Northeast in La Grange, Ky.

He was born Feb. 18, 1928, in Trimble County, Ky., the son of George and Vada Wise Abbott. He worked for more than 41 years for the postal service, starting the day after he graduated from high school in May 1947, while his father was the postmaster. He was appointed postmaster Dec. 30, 1970, when his sister retired, and he retired Dec. 30, 1988. He was a member of Bedford United Methodist Church, was a former member of the Bedford Rotary Club and was a charter member and former member of the Bedford Volunteer Fire Department. After retiring, he had more time to enjoy golfing, watching NASCAR and Indy races on television, and his favorite hobby, woodworking. He most enjoyed being with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy Ball Abbott; four daughters, Pamela Perkinson and Abby Turner, both of Bedford, Ky., and Lana Westrick and Mary Lou Stewart, both of Milton, Ky.; three brothers, Leslie Abbott of St. Matthews, Ky., Graham Abbott of Whitesburg, Ky., and Ben Abbott of Louisville, Ky.; one sister, Lois Morgan of Bedford, Ky.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one granddaughter.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ransdell Funeral Home in Bedford, Ky. Burial will be in Bedford I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. Tuesday until the service.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to The United Methodist Homes of Kentucky.

BEDFORD, Ky. โ€“ Willie Ray "W.R." Abbott, 78, of Bedford, passed away Friday, October 20, 2006 at Baptist Hospital Northeast, LaGrange while in Hospice.

He was born on Feb. 18, 1928, in Trimble County to George and Vada (Wise) Abbott.

W.R. Abbott served more than 41 years in the postal service. He began his career as a postal carrier the day after he graduated from Trimble County High School in May 1947 while his father, George Abbott, was postmaster. W.R. was appointed postmaster on Dec. 30, 1970, when his sister Lois Morgan retired from the position. He retired from the "family business" on Dec. 30, 1988. During the 1950s and 1960s, W.R. owned and operated The Frontier Roller Skating Rink and The Bedford Western Auto Hardware store in Bedford.

Upon retirement W.R. had more time to enjoy golfing, watching NASCAR and Indy races on television and his favorite hobby, woodworking. But what W.R. enjoyed most in his life was his family.

He was also a member of the Bedford United Methodist Church, a former member of the Bedford Rotary Club and a former charter member and co-captain of the Bedford Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy Ball Abbott of Bedford; four daughters, Pamela Perkinson of Bedford, Lana Westrick of Milton, Mary Lou Stewart of Milton, Abby Turner of Bedford; three brothers, Leslie Abbott of St. Matthews, Graham Abbott of Whitesburg, and Ben Abbott of Louisville; one sister, Lois Morgan of Bedford; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

His parents; two brothers, Stanley Abbott and Ronnie Abbott; and one granddaughter, Terri Ann Tilley, preceded him in death.

The funeral was held Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Ransdell Funeral Home in Bedford, with Dr. Harold Henson and Dr. Dennis Plank officiating.

Active pallbearers were his six grandsons: Tyler Tilley, Matt Westrick, Adam Westrick, Jordan Stewart, Trey Turner and Cory Turner. Honorary pallbearers included Mr. Abbott's classmates from Trimble County High School Class of 1947.

Burial was at the Bedford I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

The family requests that memorial contributions be given to The United Methodist Homes of Kentucky.
