James Smith; Serg’t.; mustered in Aug. 1, 1863, 8th U. S. Colored Regiment, Company G; mustered out with company, Nov. 10, 1865.

His Regiment engaged in the battle at Olustee, Fla., where loss to the Eighth was very severe; 49 men killed, 180 men wounded, 63 missing, probably wounded and left on the field.

The 8th U. S. Colored Regiment also played a large role at the Siege of Petersburg, Va.
