Gladys Freida Schrader was the fourth in line of seven children born to Charles and Tryphona Schrader. She was born in Gagen, Wi. on June 20, 1926. She attended a one room schoolhouse in Eagle River, Wi. until her family moved to Fuller Spur (Watersmeet Township) during her young childhood days, where she then attended school in Watersmeet. During her teen years she worked at Twa's restaurant. On August 12, 1943 she married William Alphonse Spargo Jr. of Ewen, Mi. They were married in Ontonagon, Mi., but resided and lived in Watersmeet their entire married life. Gladys was a war bride, as her husband was serving in India during World War 11 in the U. S. Army. They had three children---Judith,Charles and Roger. Charles died when he was only two days old from birth complications. Roger died at the age of 51 in the year 2000 from a massive heart attack. Glady's husband William (Bill) also preceded her in death in 1979 from a massive heart attack.
In her young married years Gladys worked at the Toumey Nursery (a branch of the United States Forest Service)here in Watersmeet. Later she spent many years doing house cleaning for several clients. She was a caring friend and neighbor. At one point in time she lovingly checked on two or three of her elderly neighbors that were in the beginning stages of Alzheimers, often taking them meals and doing other necessary chores for them. Ironically that disease afflicted her in latter years too--as well as diabetes and heart problems.
She enjoyed her family and doting upon her grandchildren. She was a loving grandmother to Randy Scott Hall, Eva Marie Hall, Michael Lee Spargo, Corrina Marie Spargo, and step granddaughter Susan(Ron)Arnold. She was also blessed with two great grandchildren, Sierra and Dakota Spargo, children of Michael Spargo. Her granddaughter Corrina and husband Matthew are expecting their first child in early Jan. of 2009.
Gladys enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening and just keeping busy with life. She faithfully attended the Watersmeet Baptist Church for many years. In her younger years she taught Sunday School and was the church janitor for many years. As Alzheimer's began to progress she lived with her daughter Judy & Hayden until they were no longer able to care for her many needs. Sadly the last nine months of her life had to be spent in a nursing home where she went home to be with Jesus on Oct. 5, 2006 at the age of 80 years and 3 1/2 months. Gladys was also preceded in death by her mother in 1955, her father in 1970, older brother Arthur who died at the age of three, her older sister Velma who died from pnemonia at the age of 15, her older sister Florence in 1990, a younger brother Albert in 1987, her youngest brother Kenneth in 2005 and her grandson Randy Scott Hall who was murdered in 2003. She is survived by a younger brother Elmer (Laura), her daughter Judith and wonderful son-in-law Hayden, besides her four remaining grandchildren, great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Wandersee Funeral Home of Bruce Crossing, Mi. was in charge of arrangements and assisted the family during this time. Funeral services were held at the Watersmeet Baptist Church on October 9, 2006 with the Rev. Skip Pullen officiating. Visitation for family and friends was at 1:00 p.m. with the service following at 2:00 p.m. A wonderful luncheon was provided by church family and friends. Burial was in the Spargo family plot in the Watersmeet Cemetery in Watersmeet, Michigan.
Mom is deeply loved and missed but we know she is with our heavenly father in heaven and no longer suffering.
