RUSSELL, WILLIAM JARVIS (1802–1881). William Jarvis Russell, naval officer, army officer, and legislator, was born in Onslow County, North Carolina, on January 3, 1802. He was single when he moved to Brazoria, Texas, from Louisiana in 1828. He took the oath of allegiance to Mexico on April 7. On March 12, 1832, he married a widow, Eleanor Heady Guthrie, born in 1813 in Spencer County, Kentucky.

At the battle of Velasco Russell is said to have fired the first shot of the Texas Revolution, on June 26, 1832.

In 1871 he moved to Austin and in 1881 to Clarksville, where he died at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, William McMaster, on November 17, 1881. His widow died in Dallas on March 22, 1890. Russell was a member and past president of the Texas Veterans' Association.

The San Antonio papers published appropriate obituaries on the death of the old soldier and statesman of the Republic of Texas, Captain Wm. J. Russell, who was born in North Carolina, in the year 1779, and came to Texas in 1826. He was one of the colonists who, in 1833, captured the Mexican garrisons at Valasco and Anahuac. He was a member of the Senate of the Republic in 1837-8. He lived many years on the lover Brazos; removed to Fayette county, and to Austin afterwards.

His surviving family consists of Judge William H. Russell, of Cameron county, Daniel L. Russell, of Bell county; R. M. Russell, of Travis county; Stillwell H. Russell, U.S. deputy marshal for this western district; T. B. Russell, deputy U.S. marshal at Brownsville; James A. Russell, of Austin; Mrs. Capt. McMaster, Mrs. Dr. E. O. Spencer and Miss Fannie Russell of San Antonio and Mrs. Hotchkiss, of Plantersville, Grimes county.
