He was born in Utica on January 4, 1934, the son of Walter and Helen Wnuk Freeman, and attended local schools. Gene loved traveling to Florida and was always excited to go to Sylvan Beach. He also enjoyed sitting on the deck with his scanner with the family dog, Sierra.
His survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, with whom he resided with since the passing of his mother in 2007, and his brother and sister-in-law; five nieces and nephews; as well as eight great-nieces and nephews and several cousins.
