VIDA PEARL SHORT, a resident of Rosston, Okla. was born Oct. 11, 1922 in Knowles, Okla., in Beaver County to Arthur and Gladys (Perkins) Berends. She passed away Jan. 6, 2006 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center in Wichita, Kan. at the age of 83 years, 2 months, and 25 days. She attended school in a rural one-room school house near Gate and graduated from Gate High School. Vida was united in marriage to Leo Short on Feb. 27, 1946, in Kansas City, Kan., and remarried on Feb. 27, 1993, in Olney, Texas. Being the wife of a military man serving in the U.S. Army, she lived in several different states and overseas. She was a beautician and homemaker, receiving her cosmetology license in the mid-1960?s. Vida worked at Westcon in Wichita, Kan. She attended the Sure Foundation Fellowship Church, of rural Buffalo, Okla. As a homemaker, one of her greatest joys was caring for her family, whether it was teaching games to little ones, or cooking for the holidays. Vida enjoyed crocheting, playing cards and working puzzle books. She was always happiest when her family came home for visits.
Vida was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Floyd Berends and one sister Edna Malt, an infant son, Richard Dwayne, and two infant grandchildren, Sherry Lynette Short and Arthur Elliott Short, Jr., and a nephew, Tony Berends.
Vida is survived by her husband Leo Short, of the home; two sons Dale Short, of Brighton, Colo., and Arthur Short of Vero Beach, Fla.; three daughters Nancy Lawson, of Abilene, Texas, Charlotte Edgington, of Wichita, Kan. and Donna Wheeler of Woodward, Okla.; 26 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and numerous friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at the Gate Friends Church, Gate, Okla. with Rev. Randel Thrasher and Rev. Lyle Whiteman officiating. Tiffeny Lawson sang "Sheltered in the Arms of God" and, with Shawn Wiggins sang "Jesus Hold My Hand". Casket bearers were the grandsons. Burial was in Gate Cemetery, Gate, Okla. The family suggests memorials to the Sure Foundation Fellowship Church or the Gateway to the Panhandle Museum, Gate, Okla., in care of Wilkinson Funeral Service, PO Box 302, Buffalo, OK 73834, under the direction of Wilkinson Funeral Service Buffalo, Okla.
