The Rev. Father Paul Henry Skelton passed away peacefully at 1:43 a.m. Friday (May 20, 2016) at the Tuscola Health Care Center, Tuscola.

Father Paul Henry Skelton was born on June 9, 1929 on the family farm in East Oakland Township in Coles County, the only child of George and Alice Carroll Skelton. Both parents preceded him in death.

Father Skelton attended grade school and high school in Oakland. After graduating from high school, Father Skelton worked for four years at the U.O. Colson Company in Paris, Illinois.

Father Skelton served honorably for two years in the U.S. Army from 1952 through 1954 and was a recipient of the Army's Good Conduct Medal.

In 1957, Father Skelton received a bachelor's degree in business and education from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. While studying at EIU, Father Skelton was a member of the Newman Catholic Student Club and served as its president during his senior year of college.

Before pursuing studies for the priesthood, Father Skelton taught high school in Oak Lawn.

Father Skelton attended St. John's Home Missions Seminary in Little Rock, Arkansas. Father Skelton was ordained a priest at the age of 34 on May 23, 1964, by Bishop William A. O'Connor at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, Illinois.

Father Skelton served as a parish assistant priest at St. Paul Parish in Highland, 1964-1969; Our Saviour Parish in Jacksonville, 1969-1973; and at St. Patrick Parish in Decatur, 1973-1974. While serving in Jacksonville, Father Skelton was also the Catholic chaplain for Illinois College and MacMurray College.

Father Skelton served as pastor at St. Mark Parish in Winchester and St. Patrick Parish in Bluffs, 1974-1979, and at St. Mary Parish in Taylorville, 1979-1987.

Father Skelton served as pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Villa Grove from 1987 until 2004, St. Michael Parish in Hume from 1987 until 2004, and St. Thomas Aquinas in Brocton from 1987 until it closed in 2001.

Father Skelton served as parochial administrator of Sacred Heart Parish in Villa Grove and St. Michael Parish in Hume from 2004 until 2015 when he was appointed pastor emeritus of Sacred Heart in Villa Grove and St. Michael in Hume in July of 2015.
