Roby Doctor's Funeral Today As He Planned It 10 Years Ago

Roby, Feb. 6 - Funeral for Dr. Jefferson Davis Davis, 74, pioneer Roby physician, will be held Thursday , according to members of his family, just as he planned it 10 years ago.

Dr. Davis, who started his medical career the year Roby and Fisher County were organized, in 1886, died at his home here Wednesday at 8 a.m. He had been in ill health for several years.

James P. Stinson of Abilene, a life-long friend, will speak briefly at the funeral, which will be held in the residence beginning at 3 p.m.

Burial will be in the Roby Cemetery under the direction of the McCombs and Tate Funeral Home of Rotan. Five of eight pallbearers , in accordance with his request, will be men he delivered at birth during the early years of his medical practice. They are Mike Barron and Emmett Cave of Rotan, Tom and Jeff Simmons of Roby, and J. T. Davis of Longworth. He requested as other pallbearers B. L. Conley of Roby, Frank and Nale Terry, both of Longworth.

Dr. Davis was born Aug. 17, 1871 in Winnsboro. He came to Fisher County on Dec. 3, 1886, with, as he often declared to friends, "a good horse and saddle, new saddlebags, a brand-new doctor's license and one dollar, six bits in my pocket."

In the first years of his practice, he rode horseback to treat patients in Fisher, Kent, Stonewall, Dickens, Haskell, Nolan and Mitchell counties. He later used a horse and buggy, and then, one of the first automobiles to carry on his practice.

He was a graduate of the Louisville, Ky. medical school, a former member of the Oddfellows Lodge, and county health officer for many years.

His widow, the former Nellie Hinton of Roby, whom he married on Dec. 1, 1891; two daughters, Mrs. W. C. Parker of Lueders, and Mrs. Jim Eller of Lubbock; one son, Guyon Davis of Roby; and eight grandchildren survive.
