He was born in Duluth, MN on July 11, 1922. Mike was in the Merchant Marines from 1942 until 1946. He then sailed on the Great Lakes for three or four years and then changed his career to driving truck. Through the years he drove for Piggly Wiggly, Century Matthews, and Shermans retiring from Ruan Transport with a "Million Mile Award" without an accident. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 346 and a member of the Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post 2962 of Carlton. He was truly a Harley Davidson guy and rode as a member of the North Country Riders. He and his wife, Dorothy rode together for many years. Mike had a passion for building large model airplanes, which he took pride in. He was a volunteer on the USS Irvine in Duluth for many years and he loved to fish Minnesota lakes and enjoyed several trips to outback Alaska. Mike was a resident at Evergreen Knoll in Cloquet for the past 5 years where all the staff was so wonderful to him. So many friends will remember him for the special person he was.
Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his parents; brother, Forrest; sisters, Margaret "Doris", Patricia "Marie", Annabelle, and Leona; niece, Carole Grochowski Hogan; and nephew, Shelby Grochowski.
He is survived by his children, Michael, Kelly and Patrice; loving niece, Correen Grochowski Wright; nephew, Gerald Grochowski; many great-nieces and nephews; a step-daughter, Shirley Mohelski; step-grandchildren, Dawn Petersen, Michael Mohelski, and Peggy Mohelski; numerous step-great-grandchildren; and his "special buddies", Richard Anderson, Bruce Gilchrist and Ray Waletzko.
Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2009 at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet, with a Rosary Service at 6:30 p.m. The visitation will resume on Saturday, May 9, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. until the 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis Catholic Church in Carlton, with full military honors presented by the Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post Honor Guard. Luncheon will follow at the community room at Evergreen Knoll, 1309 14th St. in Cloquet. The family has selected Nelson Funeral Care of Cloquet to assist them with arrangements.
