Jack Ross Owen, 65, died Wednesday, May 18, 2016, of congestive heart failure.
A graduate of Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, with a degree in industrial engineering technology, Mr. Owen worked as a quality control engineer with Layne and Bowler, Inc. Later, he worked as a supervisor at Schering Plough and then at Chemtura - PMC Biogenics. Mr. Owen was a wonderful storyteller and writer. He enjoyed regaling friends and family with stories of growing up in East Tennessee. He was especially pleased that two of his essays were published in The Commercial Appeal. As he said when signing off on one of his stories, "Keep your frying pan warm and greasy, and continue to do random acts of kindness."
Mr. Owen was preceded in death by his father, Jack H. Owen.
He is survived by his mother, Bernice Owen Minge of Athens; his wife of 36 years, Debra Jones Owen of Germantown; his mother-in-law, Gretchen Jones; his brothers-in-law, Wayne Jones (Elizabeth) and Keith Jones (Rebecca); his niece, Rachel Jones; and nephews, Ben, Daniel, and Chris Jones.
A memorial service for Mr. Owen will be held on Sunday, May 22, at 5 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church in Cordova.
The family will receive visitors from 4 to 5 p.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Trinity Baptist Church, 8899 Trinity Rd., Cordova, TN 38018, where Mr. Owen was a charter member and deacon; or to Brinkley Heights Ministries, 3275 Rosamond Avenue, Memphis, TN 38122, where he served as a volunteer.
