Mrs. Sylvia Parisi, 83, died Sunday in Sonoma, Calif., where she had lived for the last 10 years. Mrs. Parisi, along with her late husband, Pasquale, owned several stores, restaurants, and gas stations in the Cleveland area during the Depression. Most of them were in Italian neighborhoods, said her daughter, Angela P. McDowell of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.
She was born in Silverlake, N.J., and was raised in Naples, Italy. She returned to the United States in 1926 and married Mr. Parisi in Cleveland when she was 16. When they first came to America, she and her husband went door-to-door selling fruits and vegetables, her daughter said. At one point, when her father could only speak Italian, her mother single-handedly ran the gas station, where the patrons spoke English. She changed tires and kept the business going.
Mrs. Parisi's father was an artist whose work appears in many churches in Massachusetts. She enjoyed crocheting, but never considered herself much of an artist, her daughter said.
She is also survived by daughter Patricia Parisi West of Cleveland; son, Vincent W. of Sonoma, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Services are today at 10:30 a.m. at Chambers funeral home, 4420 Rocky River Dr., Cleveland.
