William Dorsey Jelks and Alice Shorter married in Eufaula in June, 1883. Jelks was Governor of Alabama from 1900 to 1907. He died December 13, 1931 and is buried at Fairview Cemetery.
Funeral services for Mrs. Jelks were held at 3 p.m. on October 22 at her home on College Hill. Bishop Carpenter officiated and was assisted by the Rev. Stanleigh Jenkins, rector of the Episcopal church.
Mrs. Jelks was widely known and greatly loved in Eufaula. She was the daughter of the late Major and Mrs. Henry Shorter.
Mrs. Jelks was predeceased by one daughter, Catherine Shorter Jelks Comer, who died in 1936. She was survived by three grandchildren and a great-grandaughter.
