Regt. I am anxious to connect myself with the Medical Department on account of the immense advantages afforded me in acquiring a more extended knowledge of my profession, a profession chosen before the war and obtained at the cost of considerable time, money and labor; and one, too, which my circumstances in life will not justify me in abandoning so early. As an officer of the line, in which capacity I have been serving since an early period in the war, my duties preclude the possibility of retaining what was originally acquired. I trust, therefore, the Department will approve my resignation and grant me the privilege of connecting myself with that branch of the service to which my profession adapts me, since such a change cannot possibly prove detrimental; on the contrary, I flatter myself that I can serve the country more acceptably in my own professional sphere than as an officer of the line for which I have no educational advantages. Not exempted by law from military duty, my services in some capacity are due to the Confederate States, and I greatly prefer that service which will not sacrifice my only means of support in [the] future. Very truly, Your Obt. Servt., Jno. S. Deyerle, Major, 54th Va. Regt.". [Docketing on the back of this letter by
