Theodore was born in Valley County, Nebraska, and when he was 5, in 1888, his parents moved the family to Leroy, Logan County, Nebraska. Theodore was accustomed to sod houses because that's what he lived in in Nebraska. His father had already spent time on their new land in Leroy and he built a barn for the family and livestock to live in until they could build a proper house. They lived in the barn the first year and then moved into the house. Theodore learned to farm and ranch in the harsh conditions of northeastern Colorado, on the border with Nebraska. Theodore's grandparents were members of the Evangelical Church and his uncle was an Evangelical Church circuit minister. Theodore continued on that path and became a circuit minister also. He probably met Anna Remke at the Evangelical Church where she was living in Harlan County. In the 1910 Census they were living in Chase County, Nebraska, which is west of Harlan County, near the Colorado border. In 1910 they had a son just 3 months prior to the Census, Harvey W. A few years later he registered for the WWI draft living in Denver, CO. By 1929 Theodore and Anna were living in Billings, MT, where he was the minister of the First Evangelical Church. For the 1930 Census in Billings his two sons were living at home: Harvey W (20) working as a bookkeeper for a machinery company and Sylas E (18) was working as a clerk in an oil company. In 1931 they had moved to Colorado Springs, CO, where he was the minister of the Calvary Evangelical Church. In 1940 Theodore (56) and Anna (52) were living back at the homeplace in Leroy with no children. His father had died in 1938 and his mother was still living, so perhaps he was helping with family affairs. But he was back on the road when he registered for the WWII draft in Ramah, El Paso County, CO, which is quite a ways south of Leroy. And after the war, in 1946, Theodore was the minister at the University Heights Evangelical Church in Boulder, CO. By 1959 Thodore had retired and they lived in Denver, CO, at least until 1967.
