Church Services for Roger Ashley, 72, of Matador, will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday, May 21, 2016 at the First Baptist Church in Roaring Springs with Larry Harvey officiating. Interment will follow at Roaring Springs Cemetery under the direction of Zapata Funeral Home of Matador. Mr. Ashley passed from this life on May 16, 2016 in Lubbock. Mr. Ashley was born on February 13, 1944 in Roaring Springs, Texas to Carl Hines Ashley and Edith Faye Underwood. He grew up in Roaring Springs, Texas and attended school there from 1st through 12th grade, graduating in 1962. He first met the love of his life, Linda Williamson at the young age of 11, but he didn’t take her on a first date until he was 19 in 1964. They dated for one year before they married on June 6, 1965. They welcomed six children into the world between the years of 1966 to 1982. As a young man, Mr. Ashley started his first job as a lifeguard at the Springs Ranch in Roaring Springs. Mr. Ashley was a man of many trades and talents. Throughout his life he worked as a mechanic, painter, managed a feed store, and ran a service station in Kermit, Texas. Roger spent the better years of his life doing a job that only certain people are called to do. Mr. Ashley preached the word of God to many people throughout his lifetime. Everywhere Roger would go he could minister to anyone that was willing to listen and even those who wouldn’t. Roger Carl Ashley is survived by his wife Linda Sue Ashley of Matador, two siblings: Joyce Meredith and Kenneth Ashley both of Roaring Springs, six children; Lisa Rose of Plainview, Texas, Sheldon Ashley and wife Keisha of Matador, Cory Ashley of Plainview, Jared Ashley and wife Deanna of Lubbock, Kimberly Ashley of Matador, and Rhonda Slate and husband Kory of Matador, fifteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. He is also survived by a grandchild of the home, Jubal Ashley. Roger is preceded in death by his parents; Carl and Edith Ashley, and his sister; Shirley Smith.
